You might think you only need to wear sunscreen when you head outside – especially during spring and summer months, when the sun is actually out. But if sunscreen isn’t part of your daily skincare routine, it should be. Without proper protection, the sun can damage skin and lead to premature aging.

Sun damage is the leading cause for aging skin

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Up to 90 percent of the visible skin changes commonly attributed to aging are caused by the sun.” To keep your complexion young and fresh, don’t be shy with sunscreen.

Any amount of sun exposure can damage DNA

Even if you like a good tan and don’t burn easily, it’s important to protect your skin. That’s because the UV radiation from the sun can damage DNA.

According to a REN Clean Skincare representative, “Sunscreen products contain ingredients that help absorb UV rays and convert the sun’s radiation into heat energy, which acts as a physical sunscreen that helps to deflect and scatter the rays before they penetrate the skin.”

UV rays can lead to skin cancer

Another super important reason to wear sunscreen is to avoid skin cancer. That’s because UV radiation “is the most preventable risk factor for skin cancer”, according to the EPA.

“Broad spectrum” sunscreens protect from both immediate and long-term skin damage

When shopping for a sunscreen, look for “broad spectrum”. That’s because it protects against UVB rays that cause immediate damage, like sun burns. But it also protects against UVA rays, which lead to premature aging, DNA damage and free radicals.

Sunscreens hydrate and nourish skin

Sunscreen formulas don’t just protect against sun damage. According to dermatologist, Howard Murad, “Sunscreens should also include hydrators, anti-inflammatory agents, and antioxidants” to repair and protect the skin not only from the sun, but also against environmental pollution.
