7 easy ways to go plastic free

It’s hard to imagine a world without plastic – it’s everywhere! Which is why it’s so hard to imagine going plastic free. It’s an overwhelming thought, and it’s tricky even knowing where to start. But if you want to reduce the amount of plastic you use and throw away, there are lots of easy ways to cut back and go plastic free. Here are seven to get you started.

Shop with your tote bag

When you go shopping, you don’t just bring home your new purchases. You also bring home lots of plastic, too. So, bring your own tote bag along and ask the cashier to use that instead.

Shop the bulk food section

Food packaging requires lots of plastic – most of which isn’t reusable. So, you can shop in the bulk section and pick up your grains, legumes, granola, sugar and nuts using your own jars, containers or plastic bags.

Use a reusable coffee cup

If you’re in the habit of grabbing a cup of coffee or tea at your favorite cafe, chances are you’re throwing away the cup every single day. And that’s a lot of waste. Instead, buy one travel mug, like this Ello Cole Vacuum-Insulated Stainless Steel Travel Mug, and reuse it as long as you can.

Make your own milk

Now, if you drink cow’s milk, this isn’t an option. But it you prefer nut-based beverages, like almond milk, cashew or hazelnut milk, you can easily make your own and cut back on plastic waste this way, too.

Refill personal care and household products

Some stores give you the option of refiling housecleaning products and even personal care products like soap, shampoo, etc. If this is an option where you live, consider giving it a go.

Drink loose leaf tea

All the packaging that goes into a box of tea is pretty wasteful. If you have the option of buying loose leaf tea in bulk, do that. If you can bring your own tea tin or reusable bag – even better!

Reuse takeaway containers

The next time you order in, don’t toss the containers. Instead, give them a good clean and reuse them as long as possible. They’re a great way to store leftovers or to even pack your lunch in.

In January, disgraced physician and USA gymnastics doctor, Dr. Lawrence G. Nassar, was charged with criminal sexual conduct with more than 150 female athletes.
