On Friday, Ariana Grande re-entered the music scene with the release of her brand new single, “No Tears Left to Cry.” This is Grande’s first single since her 2016 album, “Dangerous Women.” But more importantly, this marks Grande’s return to the music scene after a suicide bomber attacked her May 2017 concert in Manchester, England.

Following the Manchester attack, which killed 22 people, and injured over 500, Grande suspended her international tour. Three weeks later, she held a One Love Manchester charity concert. And after finishing her tour, she kept a pretty low profile.

Returning to the studio was difficult for Grande, who shared that the attacks had “been a lot emotionally.” But when she did, she brought something powerful with her.

According to Pharrell Williams, who worked with Grande on this single, “The things that she has to say on this album, it’s pretty next level.”

Grande’s poignant melody lines and resilient lyrics are almost ballad-like, against a classic pop structure:

“Right now I’m in a state of mind/ I wanna be in like all the time/ Aint’ got no tears left to cry/ So I’m pickin’ it up, I’m pickin’ up (oh yea0/ I’m lovin’, I’m livin’, I’m pickin’ it up/ Oh I just want you to come with me/ We’r on another mentality/ Ain’t got no tears left to cry (so don’t cry)/ Do I’m picking’ it up, I’m pickin’  up (oh yeah)/ I’m ovin’, I’m living, I’m pickin’ it up.”

What makes her lyrics especially powerful is her music video directed by Dave-Meyers. It begins with Grande defying gravity, walking upside down in what looks like an old gothic-inspired architecture.

The video continues in a dark, evening setting, which finally breaks with the sunrise at the close of the video, along with the shot of a little worker bee – the symbol of Manchester.
