People living in the North Eastern United States are used to snow storms. It’s just part and parcel of their winter season. But the massive storm this weekend won’t just sack the North East. It’s affecting places like Texas, Florida and South Carolina, too. So, it’s safe to say that wherever you call home, you may be affected by this bomb cyclone. Here’s how you can stay safe and warm until it’s over.

Extreme temperatures combined with hurricane-high winds mean one thing: stay inside! Whatever you have to do outside is probably not as important as you think.

You might want to brave the storm and take a wintery risk, but it’s a good idea to first check your town or city’s weather advisory and trust that they have your best interests in mind.

If you do need to venture out, follow the advice of Keri Nelson, who’s seen six winters in Antarctica, and wear lots of layers, including thermal underwear, multiple socks and coats with wind breaking materials.

And if you have a dog, remember that if it’s too cold for you, it’s likely too cold for them as well. Ashley Levinson, a veterinarian says that if you see your dog shivering, it’s a clear sign that he or she needs to warm up since dogs hardly ever shiver. And if you take your dog out for a walk, protect them from cold water which can make their body temperature plummet.

If you start to feel cooped up inside, use it as an opportunity to hunker down and get cozy. You can organize and tidy neglected areas of your home. You can dust off your books and dive into a great story. You can even turn your complaints into a gratitude list.

Whatever you do, respect Mother Nature and keep yourself safe and warm.

What you eat can play a huge role in how you feel and think throughout the day. And when it comes to sugar, it can either support cognitive function or impede our thought processes. Researchers found that the so called “sugar coma” is a real thing, and it could explain why it’s hard to focus after you’ve indulged in a sweet treat. Read more about sugar coma below.
