If you’re new to the health and fitness world, or you’ve been MIA for a while, you probably feel a little overwhelmed. Where should you start? What should you do? There’s so much information out there, and loads of videos and tutorials to follow. So, it’s completely understandable if you feel a bit lost. But don’t fret. These five steps can help you create a successful and sustainable fitness journey. 

Fitness expert, Jillian Michaels, is no stranger to helping people lose weight, get strong and be proud of their bodies. She’s helped plenty of people who are just starting out, and over the years, she’s come up with five steps to help you not only start your fitness journey but continue it, too.  

Here’s what Michaels suggests for a sustainable and successful fitness journey:

Do the math

Fitness journeys might seem complicated, however, Michaels reminds us that it all boils down to simple math. Consuming more calories/energy than you use will lead to weight gain. So, it’s important to know what you’re eating so you can adjust to your actually energy needs.

Focus on food quality, not food groups

Some diets shy away from fats. Others, carbs. But Michaels welcomes all macronutrients and whole foods. The foods you want to avoid? Fake fats, processed sugars, dyes, flavors, etc. 

Choose something you can live with

There are many ways to get fit, but they’re not all going to be right for you. So, it’s important to find the one you can commit to. Realistically speaking, what do you enjoy, how often can you do it and is it reasonable? 

Sure, working out is a challenge, but is your fitness plan a challenge or fitness sabotage? 

Try a coach

No one expects you to be a exercise science expert. So, to keep yourself safe and strong, consider finding one. You can hire a personal trainer, you can sign up for classes at a gym or yoga or pilates studio. Or, you can follow along with your favorite YouTube channel or pick up a couple DVDs. 

A fitness coach is a great way to stay accountable, motivated and on track.

Be balanced

You’re human. So, there will be days when you’re super committed and focused. Then, you’ll have slip-ups, off days and days when you cheat. Instead of punishing yourself for this, bring balance and compassion to your fitness journey. 

So, you slipped up? The next day, create balance by cutting back or adding a couple extra minutes to your workout. No Big Deal.
