Last month, over 200 million eggs were recalled from stores and restaurants after a salmonella outbreak began. Since then, 12 more individuals have gotten sick, leading to a total of 35 cases of salmonella across nine states.

Even though millions of eggs have been recalled, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement on Twitter (@CDCgov), “Check the egg carton in your home: 200+ million eggs have been recalled. Eggs produced by Rose Acre Farms have been linked to 35 Salmonella infections reported from nine states.”

11 of the 35 individuals affected have been hospitalized due to complications, however the CDC has not reported any deaths. Symptoms of salmonella are diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, and for people with an already compromised immune system, salmonella can be life-threatening.

The salmonella outbreak has been traced to an Indiana facility called Rose Acre Farms. However, the bacteria spread in Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.

Companies like Coburn Farms, Country Daybreak, Crystal Farms, Walmart and Food Lion hare only some of the distributors of the contaminated eggs.

Until further notice, the CDC advises consumers to “not eat, serve or sell recalled eggs produced by Rose Acre Farms’ Hyde Country farm.”

This is a blow to the Rose Acre Farms, however, this is not their first salmonella problem. Bad in 1990, three different salmonella outbreaks were associated with Rose Acre Farms. Hundreds of individuals were sick.
