Detox after the holidays with this 1-day reset

And just like that, the holidays have come and gone. How are you feeling? Hopefully, you have lots of special memories to look back on. But chances are, you’re feeling a bit worse for wear, too. Between holiday stress, food, travel and busyness, you probably need a serious reset, too. Don’t worry, you don’t have to do some sort of extreme detox. This simple, 1-day reset should do the trick and set you right.

Best foods for a 1-day reset

Integrative medicine doctor, Amy Shah, M.D., says holidays can be hard on your gut. So, she recommends resetting your gut by including the following foods in your daily menu:

1. Vegetables, like broccoli and artichokes….These vegetables contain prebiotic fibers which support good gut bacteria.

2. Leafy greens, like spinach…These are easy to digest and they provide us with lots of antioxidants.

3. Anti-inflammatory spices like turmeric, cumin and cinnamon…These spices are great for your gut and can help you feel calm post-holidays.

4. Fermented foods, like miso, sauerkraut and pickles… Why? When you get probiotic bacteria from food sources, there’s a better chance the bacteria will reach your colon and support healthy gut bacteria down there, too.

How to do a 1-day reset

In the morning…

Eat: Skip breakfast. Instead, drink a glass of water. Wait a couple minutes, and drink 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar diluted in water to help balance blood sugar.

Do: Sit in the sunlight to reset your circadian rhythm and if you can, go barefoot outside for a little while.

At lunchtime…

Eat: Eat roasted or steamed vegetables, like those listed above. You can also enjoy a serving of berries.

Do: Try a workout so you sweat a little bit.

At dinner time…

Eat: Make your own homemade soup, and if you can, add a root vegetable, like sweet potato, or even some vitamin-rich squash.

Do: Go for a quick walk outside and take a high-quality magnesium supplement.

This simple 1-day detox can help restore balance to your gut bacteria and help you feel great after the holidays are said and done.
