Dolly Parton is famous for her iconic voice and legacy in country music. But did you know that this diva is also the powerful woman behind several philanthropic efforts? On Tuesday, Parton donated her 100 millionth book as part of her Imagination Library charity. It’s just one way she’s helping to spread literacy to children throughout the world.

Back in 1995, Parton started her Imagination Library. The program set out to provide free books to children from the time of their birth until they began school, no matter what their family’s income was.

But why focus on literacy? As Parton explained, “My daddy couldn’t read and write, but daddy was so smart. He could just do numbers in his head. But my daddy then after he was grown, he couldn’t read or write; he thought that it was just too hard to do.”

So that’s why Parton is passionate about helping children read. As she said,”if you can learn to read, if you can read, you can self-educate yourself.”

Since 1995, Parton’s Imagination Library has provided tens of millions of free books to children throughout the US, Canada, Australia and the UK. And the numbers will continue to grow.

On Tuesday, Parton donated her 100 millionth book to the Library of Congress to help make free books even more accessible to children. In her tweet (@DollyParton), Parton announced her historic donation, and continued by saying, “I always like to say that 100 million books have led to 100 million stories.”
