Eggs. They’re such a simple food, but they can be a controversial one. For a long time, people avoided eggs like the plague because they feared rising cholesterol levels. Research now shows that eggs in moderation are actually good for cholesterol. A new study also shows that a daily serving of eggs can help to reduce the risk for heart disease and stroke.

A study published in the medical journal, Heart, observed over half a million Chinese adults to better understand the relationship between egg consumption and cardiovascular disease.

As the study reminds, “Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death and disability worldwide, including China…” And since eggs have been blamed for cholesterol problems, it behooves scientists to understand if eggs are actually to blame for serious cardiovascular problems.

Turns out, individuals who eat one egg per day actually have 11 percent reduced risk for heart disease. When it came to hemorrhagic stroke, daily egg eaters have a 26 percent reduced risk.

One reason why eggs are “significantly associated with lower risk of cardiovascular disease,” may be because they help to remove the bad type of cholesterol out of the body.

This is an association study, therefore it doesn’t identify cause and effect. But since it involves over 500,000 individuals, this study might be something to hang your hat on. Along with these positing findings concerning eggs and cardiovascular health, eggs are also a great source protein, containing all nine essential amino acids – the building blocks of the body.
