Fleetwood Mac has had a long run, and their 50-year history hasn’t always been smooth sailing for Lindsey Buckingham. He’s left Fleetwood Mac before. So, while his most recent split from the group doesn’t come as such a surprise, fans are still scratching their heads trying to understand why Buckingham left this time.

Fleetwood Mac’s representative made a statement on Monday, sharing that Buckingham and the bad were splitting. The statement reads, “Lindsey Buckingham will not be performing with the band on this tour. The band wishes Lindsey all the best.”

While the representative didn’t divulge more information, some believe that this split is due to “musical differences regarding the tour” – musical differences, which may have something to do with the inclusion of musicians Mike Campbell and Neil Finn, in their upcoming tour.

Mike Campbell is from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, while Neil Finn played with the Crowded House.

Buckingham is a key member of Fleetwood Mac. After he joined the band in 1974, he was their lead guitarist and wrote some of their most popular hits, like “Go Your Own Way.” However, this isn’t the first time he’s quit the band. Buckingham cut ties in 1987, and waited almost 10 years before playing with Fleetwood Mac again in 1992.

He also left the group again in 1998, right before an upcoming tour.

So, what does Buckingham have to say about all his comings and goings? In January, Buckingham shared with CNN, “Everything that we wore on our sleeve, the discord and nature of the band, was the people breaking up, the dysfunction..Right below all of that dysfunction is a great, great deal of love.”
