At the 2018 Women’s March, Hollywood stars, including Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman, spoke out against the sexual harassment, abuse and assault rampant in the entertainment industry. Now, Academy Award winner, Kate Winslet, is joining fellow actors, adding yet another, powerful voice to the #METOO and #TIMESUP movement.

After accepting the Dilys Powell Award for Excellence in Film, at the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards, Winslet used her speech to “say some things that matter[ed]” to her.

She acknowledge that she made “poor decisions” when she decided to work with certain “men of power”, and that she has “bitter regrets” about it.

While Winslet didn’t name these men, speculations include Harvey Weinstein, the producer of The Reader, for which she won as Oscar, as well as Woody Allen, with whom she recently worked with in the Wonder Wheel.

But why is Winslet speaking up now? She believe that her silence “might be adding to the anguish of many courageous women and men.” And that “while it rests with the rule of law to pass judgment, it lies with all of us to listen to the smallest of voices and to never stop listening.”

Winslet has spoken out against Harvey Weinstein before, saying that she refused to be bullied by him, leading Weinstein to refer to her as “difficult”. But Winslet doesn’t want this to be about her – or any other “public regret”.

Instead, Winslet asked that people “keep the focus on the terrible, secret crimes of abuse against vulnerable children, girls, women and indeed boys and men, too.”
