Does your wardrobe feel a bit discombobulated? It’s probably because your clothing and accessories are in desperate need of a color palette. And if that sounds a bit dry, restrictive and a little bit too Virgo for you, here are five easy tips that bring some much-needed color cohesion into your closet.

Caroline Joy is the creator of Un-Fancy, a minimalist fashion blog. She’s a big fan of the capsule wardrobe concept, but over the years, she’s given herself more freedom and wiggle room when it comes to the whole capsule wardrobe lifestyle.

And one way Caroline does that is by creating a flexible color palette. And since she’s been experimenting with her wardrobe for over five years, she definitely knows how to create a wardrobe that you love and actually wear.

Here are her five steps to creating a color palette that’s perfect for you.

Ask: What’s my color palette right now?

Take a good look at your current wardrobe and organize everything by color. Which colors dominate and which colors you don’t have much of?

Get curious about your wardrobe

Now that your pieces are organized by color, ask yourself which ones you love to wear and why. Which ones do you always leave on the hanger. Are there colors you don’t have, but wish you did?

Choose a color palette

When you know which colors you love and which colors you can do without, select five of them. Then, don’t just stick to each color. Instead, be open to all the shades, hues and tints within each one. Consider this your trial color palette.

Test your color palette

Since this might be your first ever color palette, try it on for size and see how it goes. If you want to borrow items from friends or family to see how your tentative color palette works for you, that’s a frugal move before you make bigger fashion investments.
