On Saturday, First Lady Melania Trump attended Barbara Bush’s funeral in Houston, Texas. She came without her husband, President Trump. And although it was a somber event, Melania appeared to be enjoying herself – at least some of the time.

President Trump remained in Washington “to avoid disruptions due to added security, and out of respect for the Bush family.” Melania, therefore represented the current administration at Bush’s funeral and took it upon herself to pay their respects.

Three former first ladies were in attendance, too, including Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama. One can imagine that the tension might have run high. However, in photos emerging from the event, it appears that Melania carried off the event with grace, and even a smile or two.

Before the funeral service began at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, Melania took her seat in the first pew, beside Barack Obama. Photographers captured an exchange between the two, and Melania appeared to be enjoying their conversation.

While Melania attended the funeral without her husband, she did bring two White House residence staff personnel with her. They were close to Barbara Bush when she served as First Lady, and Melania wanted them to have an opportunity to pay their respects as well.

Following the service, Melania expressed her condolences to the Bush family in a statement saying, “Today the world paid tribute to a woman of indisputable character and grace. It was my honor to travel to Houston to give my respects to Barbara Bush and the remarkable life she led as a mother, wife, and fearless First Lady. My sincerest thoughts and prayers continue to be with George H.W., and the entire Bush family.
