Women do a lot of things to keep their skin looking beautiful. For one thing, we spend a lot of money on cosmetic products. For another thing, some of these products are just plain strange. From horse urine to snail slime, you could say women have tried it all – including placenta skincare products to lift, from and hydrate skin. But do they?

Now, it’s important to get one thing straight: there’s nothing wrong with the placenta. It’s a small organ inside a woman’s uterus that provides nourishment to the fetus while it’s still unborn.

In fact, some moms will have the placenta dried and turned into supplements to provide postpartum nourishment to themselves.

But placenta is finding its way into skincare products, too. Beverly Hills dermatologist, Harold Lancer, recommends serums made from human placenta for their protein-rich properties.

Sheep placenta is another common source for placenta skincare products because of its anti-aging and collagen-boosting properties.

In fact, stylist, Brie Welch, uses the Biologique Recherche Serum Placenta, which is derived from pig placenta, and promised to reconstruct and heal skin, lighten dark eye circles ad fight acne breakouts and aging.

And despite it’s stinky odor, women are happy with the results. Milana A wrote this 5-star review:

Help me with my post-acne scars and re-build the skin. When used daily your skin feels young with beautiful glow.

Despite these satisfied reviews, some dermatologists aren’t convinced. Dr. Robin Ashinoff, a New York University professor of dermatology is unaware of any research to prove whether placenta skincare products are actually beneficial.
