Politics are still largely governed by, well, politicians. But it’s not so unusual to see celebrities turn to politics. From Arnold Schwarzenegger, to Clint Eastwood, all the way up to Donald Trump, former stars believe they can make a difference. Now, former Sex and the City star, Cynthia Nixon, is up for New York State governor.

In an op-ed from January, Nixon wrote: “If we’ve learned anything during this first year of the Trump presidency, it’s that the cavalry isn’t coming to save us. We ourselves are the cavalry. In 2018, each one of us has to do whatever we can to take the government back. If we want change, we have to go out ourselves and seize it.”

And seizing it, she is. This September, Nixon is up against Democratic Governor, Andrew Cuomo.

But what can a Tony, Grammy and Emmy Award-winning actress know about politics? As it turns out, Nixon is a long-time activist. Most recently, she attended the “People’s State of the Union” – the alternative to President Trump’s first-ever State of the Union address.

Nixon also worked on the advisory board for New York City Mayor, Bill de Blasio, along with Rebecca Katz and Bill Hyers. Now, both Katz and Hyers are coming together with other former New York politicians to help run Nixon’s 2018 campaign.

In her announcement video, Nixon shares that New York City has always been her home. No doubt, her love for New York is certainly driving her to make the changes she believes New York State needs, including health care and education changes, as well as ending mass incarceration.
