We’re used to seeing celebrities in retouched, air-brushed and carefully styled shots. Which is why renowned photographer, Peter Lindbergh’s latest collection of portraits is such a breath of fresh air. In his newly released book, Shadows on the Wall, Lindbergh gives us a glimpse of natural beauty showcased by today’s leading ladies. See these celebrity photos below.
Lindbergh may be known for his photographs used in the provocative Pirelli Calendar. However, Shadows on the Wall isn’t just about beautiful women. As he puts it, “What is merely beautiful has always bored me. I’m interested in what is powerful and real.”
And these words and artistic approach couldn’t come at a more relevant and opportune moment. In the #METOO and #TIMESUP movement, women are reclaiming their power and sexuality, and Lindbergh’s photographs are a quiet testament to these movements.
The photographer capitalize on the model’s own natural qualities to create a striking portrait. And in the book’s introduction, Lindbergh stressed the importance of freeing “women…from the terror of youth and perfection.”
As you look through the photographs of extraordinary women, including Dame Helen Mirren, Kate Winslet, Uma Thurman and Nicole Kidman, the idea of age becomes less and less intimidating.
Instead, age doesn’t take away beauty, but merely changes it. And as The New York Times noted, not only is there beauty in age, but there is also beauty in audacity. And these gentle, yet unapologetic portraits represent not only the audacity of Hollywood stars, but of every woman who embraces her authenticity and truth.
