Unfortunately, most women are unhappy with their body. Before, we might have blamed this epidemic of dissatisfaction on cover girls and celebrities. But a survey from Glamour has found that it’s not stars that make us feel bad about ourselves. Instead, it’s the girl next door. Or, better put, the girls you see on social media.
Back in 1984, Glamour surveyed over 1,000 women on body image. They found that 41 percent were “unhappy” with their body. 30 years later, Glamour decided to repeat the survey with 1,000 women between the ages of 18 and 40.
The women were asked the same questions, along with a few new ones. And unfortunately, the results were not inspiring.
Almost 30 years later, women still feel bad about their bodies, but it gets even worse. Now, 54 percent of women report being unhappy with their body, compared with the 41 percent in 1984.
What explains this 13 percent increase in body image dissatisfaction?
According to Jesse Fox, an assistant professor from Ohio State University, whose work involves women and self-image, “The biggest thing that stands out is social media…64 percent [of women] report that looking at pictures on sites like Facebook and Instagram makes them feel bad about their body.”
Why? Celebrities follow a very strict diet, they have personal trainers and they also get airbrushed. In short, they have an entire industry helping them to look a certain way.
But that’s not the case for all the women you follow on social media, and for this reason it’s much easier to compare yourself to them and feel bad about yourself.
