Actresses who attended the 75th Golden Globes Awards ceremony came together in solidarity to make a statement against sexual assault and harassment. By wearing all black, they were at once tough, gorgeous and unforgettable. But there were several women who showed up in color, and critics aren’t sure what to make of them.
Among the black gowns, were leading ladies like Penelope Cruz, Mariah Carey, Nicole Kidman, Jessica Biel, as well as Angelina Jolie and Emma Stone.
Even men joined in, making us love actors like Zac Efron and Chris Hemsworth even more. Since wearing black added a somber message to an otherwise festive night, it’s quite a bold decision to stand out from the crowd and wear something other than black.
But that’s exactly what German model, Barbara Meier, and actress Blanca Blanco did.
Meier’s dress was a floral gown that seemed straight out of a haute couture fairy tale. Why this choice? On her Instagram account (@barbarameier), Meier shared that while she thought the movement was “a great and extremely important initiative”, she didn’t think it should be the reason why women can’t wear “sexy clothes anymore.”
As she put it, “We were fighting a long time for the freedom to wear what we want to…if we restrict this, because some men can’t control themselves, this is huge step back in my opinion.”
As for Blanco, who wore a show-stopping red dress, she reminded followers on Twitter (@blancablanco) that “the issue is bigger than my dress color #TIMESUP”. Elsewhere, Bianco shared, “I love red. Wearing red does not mean I am against #TIMESUP movement.”
Now, it’s time for you to weigh in. What do you think of Meier and Blanco’s decision to go colorful in a moment of black solidarity?
