Wearing nothing but blue jeans and a white tee, Pink performed at this year’s 60th Grammy Awards. But this stripped down performance couldn’t have come at a better time. In an evening flooded with show-stopping numbers and extravagant outfits, Pink gave us something simply unforgettable.
Although Pink arrived at the Grammys with a stunning gown, she replaced it with a humble, everyday ensemble. She even kicked off her shoes as she took to the stage with bare feet. This is a break from Pink’s normal showy numbers and grand entrances, but she proved that you don’t need bells and whistles to make a big impression.
Pink shared the stage with one other “performer” – a sign language interpreter, who also wore jeans and a white tee, too. With a stage so simple, all the attention went to Pink’s powerful voice, and even more to her powerful message.
It was a brief performance, but her singing leaves you with goose-pumps. And the words of her ballad, “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken”, strike a sensitive chord in today’s climate.
Pink sang:
There’s not enough rope to tie me down
There’s not enough tape to shut this mouth
The stones you throw can make you bleed
But I won’t stop until we’re free
Wild hearts can be broken
It’s difficult to hear these lyrics without thinking of the #METOO and #TIMESUP movements, the Women’s 2018 March, and even the recent victory won by the sexual abuse survivors in the Dr. Larry Nassar case.
It’s a song about fighting for your rights and coming out victorious, and no doubt it’s a ballad that women can carry with them long after the buzz of last night’s Grammys dies down.
