According to motivational speaker, Jim Rohn, you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. So, what happens when most of the people you hang out with are negative friends? They can bring you down, right? But the good news is that you can choose your friends and if necessary, break up with the negative ones.
What does a negative friend look like? They can be anyone who is toxic, critical, pessimistic, a bully, and someone who drags you down instead of lifting you up. Just ask yourself how you feel after you spend time with one friend or the other.
Do you feel drained and depleted? Or, do you feel uplifted and supported?
The truth is negative friends suck the good energy right out of you, and if you experience this, it’s time to have some self respect and self love, and to start surrounding yourself with positive friends instead.
This doesn’t mean you have to be drastic about it, and these four tips can help.
Start to spend less time with him or her
It’s not your right to change your negative friend, but you are in charge of who you spend time with. So, why not invite more positivity into your life?
Create positive boundaries
You don’t have to cut people out of your life completely. But it might be time to establish healthy boundaries. Since you can’t (and shouldn’t) change your friend, you can simply let him or her know that they need to leave negativity at the door when they hang out with you.
Don’t take it personally
So often, when people are negative toward us, we take it personally. But it’s important to remember that how people behave isn’t about you. Most of the time, heir negativity is a reflection of their own inner struggles and emotional baggage.
Be compassionate
If you’re trying to be positive, congratulations. But avoid thinking that you’re better than your negative friend now. Instead, it’s important to be compassionate since we all have our own struggles in life. Right now, your negative friend is struggling with negativity, and they might not know just how negative they actually are.
