The White House has banned Kaitlan Collins, a CNN reporter, from attending future press events. It appears that Collins asked President Trump questions, which the White House deemed “inappropriate.” However, media and news outlets are in an uproar over the White House decision and are joining in solidarity with Collins.
On Wednesday, Collins, along with other reporters attended an event with the European Commission President, Jean-Claude Juncker. At the conclusion of the press conference, Collins posed specific questions to Trump.
This is considered normal protocol following press events. Collins’ questions touched on Michael Cohen, whose recordings are a pressing news topic. Collins also inquired about Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, who Trump has invited to the White House this Fall.
Trump elected to not answer these questions. Instead, an announcement was made that these and other questions could be discussed at another event, which would take place in the Rose Garden. Then, all the reporters, including Collins, were ushered out.
Collins was asked to meet with the White House deputy chief of staff, Bill Shine, along with White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who informed her that she was no longer invited to the aforementioned press event in the Rose Garden.
The reason? Her questions were considered “inappropriate.”
As a response, CNN issued the following statement (@CNNPR):
“…Collins was told by White House deputy chief of staff for communications Bill Shine and press secretary Sarah Sanders that her question were ‘inappropriate.’ They were not. Just because the White House is uncomfortable with a question regarding the news of the day doesn’t mean the question isn’t relevant and shouldn’t be asked. This decision to bar a member of the press is retaliatory in nature and not indicative of an open and free press. We demand better.”
