How to calm morning anxiety

Many of us deal with anxiety, but what about morning anxiety? There are few things worse than simply waking up and feeling anxious from the get-go. But this is exactly what happens with morning anxiety –  just the start of your day is enough to make your anxiety shoot through the roof.  Luckily, you can calm morning anxiety and get your day off to a better start. Here’s how.

Why do people have morning anxiety?

There are a few reasons why some people wake up feeling frazzled and uneasy. One reason is not enough sleep. Sleep is the time when your body restores and replenishes itself, and when you’re sleep-deprived, your mental health suffers.

Another tigger for morning anxiety is immediately thinking about everything you have to do that day. Maybe it’s all that unfinished business from yesterday. Maybe you dread going into work every day. Whatever the case may be, if your day looks bleak, it can cause morning anxiety.

How to calm morning anxiety

Create a sleep opportunity

Making sure you give yourself seven to nine hours of sleep each night helps you get enough sleep. This alone may help reduce morning anxiety.

Get up when the alarm goes off

When the alarm first goes off, it might feel like the biggest mistake to wake up. But resist the temptation to hit snooze and procrastinate in bed. Once you sit up and plant your feet on the floor, the worst is behind you.

Make a morning routine you look forward to

What would make you excited to get out of bed? Set the alarm so you have enough time to do these things for yourself. This can include your having favorite breakfast, reading a chapter from your favorite book, journaling, yoga or meditating.

Say positive affirmations

You might not be able to change your circumstances, but you can definitely change your mindset and outlook. And positive affirmations can help, especially when you want to calm morning anxiety.

You can say things like:

  • I am safe
  • I love and approve of myself
  • I trust the process of life
  • I have all the time I need
  • Everything is falling into place
