The results of the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy may not be what lawmakers envisioned, and Americans are appalled. Under the zero tolerance policy, anyone caught entering the US illegally faces criminal charges. However, children are separated from their parents in the process. People are pushing to end this “horrific practice,” and here’s how you can help.

If you think it’s difficult to change legislation to prevent the separation of parents and children, it’s not.

According to Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), this is a problem Congress can fix quickly and easily.

In a tweet on Thursday, Schatz wrote (@brianschatz), “Stop pretending that banning the separation of children from parents is a complex legislation. It’s ONE LINE, and it could pass “on suspension” in the House on Monday, and by Unanimous Consent in the Senate on Tuesday.”

And Schatz isn’t the only senator who wants to end child-parent separation for undocumented immigrants.

On Wednesday, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-California) shared on Twitter (@SenFeinstein), “UPDATE: 38 senators now support our legislation to prevent children being taken from their parents at the border. We’re building momentum to end this horrific practice. Please ask your senators to support us!”

If you’d like to help end the separation of children from their parents, here’s what you can do.

First, find out who represents you. This link helps you figure out which elected officials you should call. A couple clicks later, and you can find your senator, along with their contact information.

Every call counts!

In May, the Trump administration started its “zero-tolerance” policy to end illegal immigrants from crossing the border. In the weeks that follow, we are seeing just how dire the situation is for the children of these undocumented immigrants. Not only are the separated from their parents, but they also live in what reporters describe as a prison.
