On Monday, Melania Trump officially launched her first campaign as first lady: BE BEST. It’s the long-awaited anti-bullying program from Trump, who’s been at the White House for over a year now. Trump’s initiative is being met with mixed reviews and heavy criticism.

The BE BEST campaign is all about helping children develop positive habits, especially online. According to the BE BEST site, Trump shares that “It remains our generation’s moral imperative to take responsibility and help our children manage the many issues they are facing today, including encouraging positive social, emotional, and physical habits.”

Trump’s campaign will focus on three main pillars: well-being, social media use, and opiod abuse. And Trump is receiving heavy criticism for the second pillar, social media use.

On the BE BEST website, we are encouraged to help children “avoid negative social media interaction”, which in and of itself is a laudable cause.

Trump said, “Social media is too often used in negative ways and that it is important for children to learn positive online behaviors at a young age.”

However, due to her own husband’s bullying behavior online, critics see this as an ironic and hypocritical stance for the first lady.

One Twitter user (@ITMFA_NOW) asked Melania, “When will your husband learn his positive online behavior?”

Another Twitter user (@johnpavlovitz) advised Trump to hold her husband accountable for his online bullying saying, “That would be a way to really help our children #BeBest.”

On top of this, Trump is also under fire for potentially plagiarizing content used during the previous administration – a charge similar to when she delivered a speech, which was borrowed from former FLOTUS Michelle Obama’s speech.
