Just last week, Kim Kardashian met with President Trump to advocate for Alice Marie Johnson. Johnson has been in federal prison since 1996 and is serving a life sentence for a low-level drug offense. After Karashian’s meeting, Trump has commuted Johnson’s sentence, granting her clemency and releasing the 63-year old grandmother from the Alabama prison, where she’s been living for over 20 years.
Johnson was convicted for helping to distribute cocaine and money laundering. However, after Kardashian discovered Johnson’s case in a viral video online, she took to Washington D.C. to advocate not only for Johnson, but for prison reform, too.
Regarding Johnson’s release, the White House issues a statement saying, “While this administration will always be very touch on crime, it believes that those who have paid their debt to society and worked hard to better themselves while in prison deserve a second chance.”
In a tweet from Yashar Ali (@yashar), contributor to the New York Magazine and the Huffington Post, we see a joyful Johnson running to greet her family and friends who are there to welcome her back.
Kardashian is celebrating, too, tweeting (@KimKardashian) “BEST NEWS EVER!!!” And also taking time to express her thanks to Trump, writing, “So grateful to @realDonaldTrump, Hared Kushner & to everyone who has showed compassion & contributed countless hours to this important moment for Ms. Alice Marie Johnson. Her commutation is inspirational & ives home to so many others who are also deserving of a second change.”
