Meghan Markle’s May wedding is fast approaching, and she won’t be wearing the same tiara Kate Middleton wore on her wedding day. Is it a personal feud? A matter of taste? Have no fear, there are no bridezilla stories or pre-wedding fights behind this decision.

The tiara in question is the Cartier Halo tiara. And it’s been in the royal family for many generations. Queen Elizabeth received the tiara as a gift from her mother, referred to as the Queen Mother on her 18th birthday. Before that, the Queen Mother received this tiara from her husband – Queen Elizabeth’s father – King George VI.

When it came time for Kate Middleton’s nuptials, Queen Elizabeth loaned this crown to her. So, why isn’t Meghan Markle wearing the tiara, too?

The Cartier Halo tiara is currently on display in an exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia. The exhibition is entitled, “Cartier: The Exhibition”, and runs from March 30 to July 22. Markle’s wedding lands smack in the middle – May 19 – making it impossible for Markle to wear this historic headpiece.

What does Markle plan to wear instead?

According to author of The Queen’s Jewels: The Personal Collection of Elizabeth II, Leslie Field, “I don’t think it will be a traditional diamond tiara but it could be one loaned to her by the Queen. My feeling is that Meghan and Harry have a new way of working events.”

Perhaps Markle will wear a more modern tiara, or something drawing on her American background. Time will tell for this tiara.
