Foundation is an important product in your beauty routine. It’s the groundwork you need before you apply other products. However, many women either wear the wrong foundation shade, or they wear too much of it. But one way to avoid these makeup mistakes is to find a foundation based on your own unique undertones. Here’s a guide on how to find the perfect foundation shade.

Katey Denno is an L.A. based celebrity makeup artist, who’s worked with stars like Alessandra Ambrosio, Felicity Jones and Beanie Feldstein. So, it’s safe to say that she knows a thing or two about makeup.

There are so many foundations out there, and it can be difficult to choose. So, when it comes to choosing the right foundation, Denno says you have to take the skin’s undertone into consideration. Knowing your skin’s undertones helps you narrow down what will work for your own unique complexion.

Compare silver and gold jewelry

One way to discover your undertones is to compare how your face looks when you wear gold and silver jewelry. Gold jewelry will make your complexion look glowy if you are warm-toned. Silver jewelry will make look amazing against cool undertones.

What color are your veins?

Another option to figuring our your undertones is to look at the veins on your wrists. If the veins have a greenish color, you have yellow and warm undertones. If the veins have a purple tint to them, it’s likely that you have cool tones.

Once you know whether you have warm or cool undertones, you can find foundations that are best suited for your own skin tone.

But Denno has a couple bits of expert advice for you and your new foundation:

  • Faces are multi-tonal, so you may need one foundation shade in one area of your face, and a different shade in another area.
  • Foundation can be used to cover up certain areas of the face to even out skin tones, but in general, you shouldn’t wear the same foundation on your entire face.
