Yeast infections are pretty common, but that doesn’t make them any less annoying and frustrating. They make you feel itchy and uncomfortable down there and no one wants to feel that way! So, if you’re fed up with your yeast infection, here’s how you can treat them naturally with probiotics.
What are yeast infections?
Yeast infections are caused by Candida fungi. These fungi normally coexist with other organisms in the vagina, and as long as everything is in balance, it’s no big deal.
But if there’s an imbalance in the vaginal microbiome or the vaginal pH levels, or even if a woman’s blood sugar are too high, the Candida fungi start to multiply and voila! Say hello to a yeast infection.
With probiotics, you can rebalance the vagina’s natural microbiome and help kick mild to moderate yeast infections to the curb. Here’s how.
How to use probiotics for yeast infections
Aviva Romm, M.D., recommends using probiotics both orally and vaginally to get ri of yeast infections.
Oral probiotic suggestion
Take one to two capsules of both Lactobacillus reuteri and Lactobacillus rhamnosus every day for six to 24 weeks. (It depends on the severity of the yeast infection.)
Vaginal probiotic suggestion
Studies show that administering probiotics directly to the vaginal area has been shows to help reduce yeast infection symptoms.
Day one: insert Lactobacillus reuteri and Lactobacillus rhamnosus capsules into the vagina in the same way you would a tampon.
Day two: insert Lactobacillus crispatus capsule into the vagina.
Alternate this regimen for six to 24 weeks, depending on the yeast infection.
To make sure you get rid of the yeast infection, be sure to cut back on sugary foods, alcohol, and artificial fragrances – especially for anything that comes into contact with the vagina.
This can help restore the vaginal microbiome and vaginal pH and support the work of the probiotics.
