Smoking is bad for health. Along with tobacco and tar, individuals also inhale toxic substances, such as nickel, chromium, cadmium and beryllium. So, when e-cigs hit the market, people thought that they must be a healthier alternative to cigarettes. It’s true that more studies are necessary to fully understand the impact of e-cigs on health. But as of now, research shows that e-cigs may not be as great as we originally thought. Scroll down to know more about the negative health effects of e-cigarettes.

In a study entitled “Association between electronic cigarette use and myocardial infarction: results from the 2014 and 2016 national health interview surveys”, researchers observed 70,000 Americans and their smoking habits.

The study shared that while “e-cigarettes are promoted as a less risky alternative to conventional cigarette…they could be increasing risk of myocardial infarction.”

Heart attacks, or myocardial infarction, are still an issue with e-cigarette smokers. In fact, smoking e-cigs daily doubles an individual’s risk of a heart attack. Normal cigarette smokers triple their risk by smoking daily.

The risk of heart attack increased five times for those individuals who smoked both conventional and e-cigarettes. And the study found that many of the “vapers” were in fact, dual users – that is, people who smoked both types of cigarettes.

While the study doesn’t prove that vaping causes heart attacks, it does show that there is a link between e-cigarettes and myocardial infarction. This link may be in part due to the fact that vaping might cause heart and blood vessels to stiffen. This in turn can increase the risk for both heart disease and heart attack.
