New England Patriots football player, Julian Edelman, isn’t someone you expect to connect with school shootings. However, when someone made a threat on his social media account, he took swift action, and helped to stop a potential shooting.

In the aftermath of some shootings, we discover that people had noticed suspicious behavior and activities from the gunman before the shooting occurred. However, authorities aren’t always notified. Or, if they are, their response comes too late.

But following the Parkland Florida shooting, and the more recent YouTube shooting, people are paying more attention to warning signs, and taking them seriously.

So, when an unidentified Instagram user posted a disturbing threat under one of Edelman’s Instagram posts (@edelman11), people noticed and did something about it.

The comment read, “I’m going to shoot my school up watch the news.”

One user sounded the alarm saying, “I can’t help but notice in the comments section there is a kid saying he’s going to shoot up a school, can everybody alert the authorities please????” But he went one step further and contacted Edelman privately in an direct message on Instagram.

Once Edelman saw the message, he asked his assistant Shannen Moen to search through every single comment until she found the threat. Moen then notified Boston police who tracked the user to Port Huron, Michigan, where authorities found the home where the message originated.

There, they found a 14 year-old boy, whose mother had two rifles. The boy was charged with filing a false report of a threat of terrorism and detained, according to Port Huron Police Captain Joseph Platzer.

Edelman thanked the Instagram user who notified him saying, “Thankfully, this kid said something. We’re going to send him something, a care package, just for his work. He’s the real hero.”
