Some gals like to hop in the shower first thing in the morning. Others look forward to a warm shower to wind down at night. But is one better for you than the other? It’s all a bit personal, and here’s what experts have to say on the matter.
According to Michael Grandner, the director of University of Arizona’s Sleep and Health Research Program, “A morning shower can help shake off sleep inertia”. And for some, a shower is a great way to wake up and get the day going.
Another perk to morning showers is that they’re better for your hair if you need to wash it. That’s because if you go to bed with wet hair, all that dampness can damage your hair follices. Overtime, that can lead to a “weathering effect”, says Dr. George Cotsarelis, dermatology professor at the University of Pennsylvania.
On the other hand, a night time shower is a great way to promote restorative sleep. You see, as your body prepares for sleep, your temperature begins to drop.
An evening shower helps your body cool down since you move from the warm atmosphere of the shower to the colder air. Furthermore, when your skin’s moisture evaporates, your body cools down even more.
Finally, if you shower at night, you also have the opportunity to lather up with nourishing and hydrating creams and lotions to prevent dryness. This is not as easy to do when you’re rushing out the door after a morning shower.
As you can see, there are pros and cons to both morning and evening showers. It all depends on your lifestyle and personal preferences. When’s your favorite time to jump in the shower?
